165Hz sits just above the 144Hz gaming standard, and in practice this band also takes in the 175Hz, 180Hz and 200Hz panels that have largely replaced it — the difference between them is small, and all of them need a graphics card capable of producing that many frames before you see the benefit.
Where it is most worth having is fast-moving games: tracking a target, whipping the camera round, or anything competitive. In desktop use you will notice smoother scrolling and cursor movement, but the gain is subtler.
