NAS Hard Drives

A NAS hard drive is built for something a desktop drive is not designed to do: run continuously, in a multi-bay enclosure, for years.

Three differences matter.

Workload rating. NAS drives are rated for a far higher volume of data read and written per year than desktop drives, which are specified around a machine switched off overnight. Exceeding a desktop drive’s rating in a busy NAS is a genuine cause of early failure.

Vibration tolerance. In a full enclosure every drive vibrates and affects its neighbours. NAS drives include sensors and firmware to compensate; desktop drives do not, which is why a desktop drive in a four-bay NAS can perform poorly and wear faster.

Error recovery timing. NAS firmware reports a difficult sector quickly instead of retrying at length, which stops a RAID controller dropping the drive from the array.

Buy drives for a NAS as a matched set where you can, and remember that RAID is not a backup — it survives a drive failing, not fire, theft, ransomware or a deleted folder.

The range covers Seagate IronWolf and IronWolf Pro. See also NAS units.
