AMD Threadripper Processors

Threadripper is AMD’s high-end desktop and workstation line, with core counts far beyond mainstream Ryzen and correspondingly more memory channels and PCIe lanes.

What it is genuinely for: professional workloads that scale with cores — 3D rendering, video encoding and finishing, large software compiles, simulation, virtualisation, and machine learning preparation. If your work has you waiting on a progress bar that uses every core, this is what removes the wait.

What it is not for: gaming. Games use relatively few cores, and a mainstream Ryzen with higher clocks will match or beat a Threadripper in most titles for a fraction of the price. Buying one to game on is money spent in the wrong place.

Budget for the platform, not just the chip. Threadripper needs an sTR5 motherboard (TRX50 or WRX90) and registered ECC memory in matched sets to use all the memory channels. Those are substantial costs on top of the processor, and the cooling requirement is serious too.

The PRO models add more memory channels and PCIe lanes again, for workstation use.
