SFX & SFX-L Power Supplies

SFX and SFX-L are the small power supply standards used in compact cases where a full-size ATX unit will not fit.

SFX is the smaller of the two at 125 x 63.5 x 100mm. SFX-L keeps the same face but is longer, which leaves room for a 120mm fan instead of a 92mm one — so an SFX-L unit is usually quieter at the same wattage. If your case takes SFX-L, it is generally the better choice.

Check the case specification before ordering. An SFX-L unit will not fit an SFX-only bracket, and some cases accept both. Most small cases also expect a fully modular unit, because there is nowhere to hide unused cables.

The trade for the size is cost: a compact supply is more expensive than an ATX unit of the same wattage, because fitting the same components into less space is harder.

The range covers 750W to 1200W from Corsair SF, ASUS ROG Loki and Antec, in 80 Plus Gold and Platinum.

SFX & SFX-L Power Supplies Buying Guide and FAQ

This SFX & SFX-L Power Supplies range groups units by this feature. Below are the common questions.

What does SFX mean on a power supply?

A SFX PSU has this feature. It is a useful feature to look for when matching a unit to a modern build.

Do I need a SFX power supply?

It depends on your case: SFX units are for small-form-factor builds, while a normal tower takes a standard ATX unit. Match the feature to your parts and case.

What wattage and rating should I pair with it?

Choose wattage around your graphics card, roughly 650 to 750W for mid-range and 850W and up for high-end, and aim for a reputable 80 Plus Gold unit. That combination suits most gaming PCs.
