80 Plus Platinum is an efficiency rating. It describes how much of the mains power a supply converts into usable power for your components, with the rest lost as heat — a Platinum unit typically runs around 92% efficient at half load, against roughly 90% for Gold.

Be clear about what that does and does not buy. It does not give your components more power; a 850W Platinum unit delivers the same 850W as a 850W Gold one. What it gives you is less waste heat inside the case, a quieter fan because there is less heat to remove, and a marginally lower electricity bill.

Whether it is worth the premium depends on use. For a machine that runs heavy loads for hours every day, the savings and the reduced noise add up. For a PC used a few hours in the evening, a good Gold unit is the better value and the difference will not be noticed.

The range covers 750W to 1600W from ASUS ROG, be quiet!, Corsair, Antec, MSI and GIGABYTE, mostly fully modular.

80 Plus Platinum PSUs Buying Guide and FAQ

This 80 Plus Platinum PSUs range groups units by their 80 Plus efficiency rating. Below are the common questions on what the rating means.

What does 80 Plus Platinum mean?

80 Plus measures how efficiently a PSU turns wall power into clean power for your PC, which affects heat and running costs. Platinum is premium and very efficient. For most gaming builds, a reputable 80 Plus Gold unit is the popular choice.

Is an 80 Plus Platinum PSU worth it?

Higher ratings like Platinum and Titanium cost more for small efficiency gains, so they suit premium or always-on systems. Either way, brand reputation and the warranty matter as much as the badge.

What wattage should I choose at this rating?

Pick the wattage around your graphics card: roughly 650 to 750W for mid-range, 850 to 1000W for high-end, and 1000W and up for the very top cards. Make sure the unit has the right connectors, including a 12V-2x6 plug for current Nvidia cards, and leave a little headroom.
