£1,999 to Start: The iPhone Fold Is Called iPhone Duo, With a 23 October UK Release

iPhone Fold

Apple’s folding iPhone exists, and it is not called the iPhone Fold. Apple named it iPhone Duo. It starts at £1,999, pre-orders opened on Friday 16 October, and its UK release date is Friday 23 October 2026. Two years of leaks had the name as iPhone Fold or iPhone Ultra. Both were wrong.

Release date and the timeline

Apple announced the iPhone Duo on Wednesday 9 September 2026, at the same event as the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. The Pro models went on sale on 18 September. The Duo did not, and that gap is deliberate.

Pre-orders opened on Friday 16 October. The release date is Friday 23 October, in more than 70 countries including the UK, with 28 further countries following on 30 October. It ships on iOS 27.1 rather than the 27.0 the Pro models launched with, which is the clearest sign the software for a folding screen needed the extra six weeks.

Demand ran ahead of supply. On 16 October, the day pre-orders opened, new orders on Apple’s US store were already quoting delivery in late January. The same day, Radio Times reported that stock was mostly good at UK retailers, with shipping from 23 October, so check those before you accept a January date from Apple.

The name: why it is iPhone Duo

Everyone called it the iPhone Fold for two years. By July the regulatory and supplier paperwork had swung to iPhone Ultra. Apple used neither. The phone is the iPhone Duo.

The name makes sense once you see the product. Apple is not selling a phone that folds; it is selling a device with two displays that behave as one, which is what “Duo” points at. Both screens share the same aspect ratio so an app scales between them instead of jumping, and Apple’s whole pitch is that you use the outer screen as a normal phone and open the inner one when you want the space.

If you searched for the iPhone Fold, this is that phone: Apple just gave it a different name.

What it costs in the UK

Apple’s confirmed UK pricing: from £1,999, or £66.63 a month over 24 months, in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB. That makes it the most expensive iPhone Apple has ever sold, and £800 more than an iPhone 18 Pro.

The two-year leak consensus was $1,999 for the base model, and on the UK price that turned out to be very close. The Asian supply-chain figures of $2,600 to $2,900 for the larger capacities were the part to be sceptical about. Apple’s UK prices for the larger sizes are £2,199 for 512GB, £2,599 for 1TB and £3,199 for 2TB.

Accessories, also confirmed: an iPhone Duo Case at £79 and an iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand at £129, both orderable from 16 October. For scale on the phone itself, £1,999 is roughly two mid-range iPhones with change, or one very good gaming PC. Apple is not pricing this for everyone and it knows it.

The screens and the 90 per cent claim

Open, the inner display is 7.6 inches, and Apple says the phone is the thinnest iPhone it has ever made in that state. The inner panel has a nano-texture finish that cuts glare, which is the first time Apple has put that treatment on an iPhone screen.

Closed, the outer display is 5.4 inches. The number that matters is Apple’s claim that this gives you 90 per cent of the screen area of an iPhone 18 Pro. Folding phones have always asked you to accept a cramped outer screen as the price of the big one. If the closed Duo genuinely works like a normal phone, that objection is answered, and it is the single most important thing to check in a shop before you spend £1,999. Our iPhone Duo vs iPhone 18 Pro Max comparison draws both phones to scale, folded and open.

Both displays share the same aspect ratio, so content scales proportionally between them rather than reflowing. On the crease: the leaks claimed Apple had eliminated it “regardless of cost”. Apple made no such claim. It says the matte inner screen, and layers that slide over each other as the phone folds, minimise stress and creasing. Hands-on reports from the launch event say the crease is hard to see but still visible at some angles.

Titanium, the hinge and Touch ID

Confirmed: the frame is grade 5 titanium, polished to a mirror finish, in two colours, star white and night sky. Apple describes a precision hinge and says the phone is built to last, and it puts a custom-designed vapour chamber inside for thermal management.

There is no Face ID. The iPhone Duo unlocks with Touch ID, a fingerprint sensor built into the side button, so it works the same way open or closed. It also drops the Action button, and it takes eSIMs only. If you rely on Face ID, try the side button in a shop before you buy.

The liquidmetal hinge and the specific alloy claims from the spring leaks remain unconfirmed. Apple describes the frame and hinge cover as grade 5 titanium, and it has not published how many folds the hinge is rated for.

Chip, battery and cameras

The chip is the A20 Pro, the same silicon as the iPhone 18 Pro, which is a more interesting decision than it sounds: Apple did not give the foldable a lesser processor to make room for the hinge. Alongside it sits a custom vapour chamber and, confirmed by Apple, a dual-battery architecture, which is how you fit meaningful capacity either side of a fold. Apple rates it at up to 24 hours of typical use, and up to 44 hours of video on the outer screen or 31 hours on the inner one.

The capacity is official now too. Apple’s EU energy label, published on 16 October, gives 4,883mAh across the two cells, the same figure a supplier filing showed in July.

On cameras, the Duo has two: a 48MP main camera and a 48MP ultra wide, with 2x optical-quality zoom from the main sensor. There is no telephoto, and no variable aperture either: that is the iPhone 18 Pro’s headline feature, not the Duo’s.

iPhone Duo vs Galaxy Z Fold 8

Samsung shipped its eighth generation in July. Apple’s first has a 23 October release date, at the same money. The scorecard, now that Apple’s side of it is confirmed rather than leaked:

Track recordFirst attemptEighth generation

Our view: Samsung sells you eight generations of lessons learned, today, at a price you can find discounted. Apple sells you the first generation of something, in October, at full price, with the best chip in any phone and the one design claim nobody else has made about the outer screen. If you have owned a folding phone before, you know which of those risks you are comfortable with. If you have not, the safer first fold is not the Apple one.

Should you buy one, or wait?

Expect a wait if you have not ordered yet

New orders on Apple’s US store were quoting late January on the day pre-orders opened. If you have decided, check UK networks and retailers as well as Apple before you accept a date in the new year.

Wait for the reviews if £1,999 is a stretch

There are no independent durability results yet, because nobody outside Apple has had one for long. A folding screen and a hinge are the two components with the worst repair economics in the whole phone market. A few weeks after the 23 October release, the first teardowns and long-term reports will be out.

Do not buy it for the camera

If photography is the reason you are upgrading, the iPhone 18 Pro is the phone with the new camera hardware. The Duo is bought for the screen and the shape.

Skip it entirely if you have never wanted a folding phone

A fold solves a specific problem: wanting a tablet-sized screen without carrying a tablet. If that is not a problem you have, £1,999 buys an enormous amount of ordinary phone, and our phone range is where to look instead.

And a smaller folding iPhone?

There is a second folding iPhone in Apple’s lab, and it is the one your pocket actually wants: a clamshell, Galaxy Z Flip style, that folds a normal phone in half rather than opening into a tablet. The reporting says Apple tested it internally, considered launching it alongside the book-style model, then shelved it as not ready. Apple said nothing about it on 9 September, which is consistent with that.

Current expectation is 2027 at the earliest, and the details are thin enough that anyone quoting specs today is guessing. Our read: Apple is letting a £1,999 book-style fold test how much appetite exists before committing a cheaper clamshell to production. If the Duo sells the way first-generation Apple hardware usually sells, the clamshell becomes inevitable. Until then, the flip-style folding phones you can actually buy are Motorola’s razr line and Samsung’s Z Flip.

Quick answers

When does the iPhone Fold come out?

Apple's folding iPhone is called the iPhone Duo. It was announced on 9 September 2026, pre-orders opened on Friday 16 October, and its release date is Friday 23 October 2026 in more than 70 countries including the UK. A further 28 countries follow on 30 October.

How much does the iPhone Duo cost in the UK?

From £1,999, or £66.63 a month over 24 months, in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB. That makes it the most expensive iPhone Apple has sold, and £800 more than an iPhone 18 Pro. The case is £79 and the Folio with Kickstand is £129.

Is it called iPhone Fold or iPhone Ultra?

Neither. Apple named it iPhone Duo. Two years of leaks pointed at iPhone Fold, and by July 2026 the paperwork pointed at iPhone Ultra. Both were wrong. Most people still search for it as the iPhone Fold.

Does the iPhone Duo have Face ID?

No. The iPhone Duo uses Touch ID, a fingerprint sensor built into the side button, which works whether the phone is open or closed. It also has no Action button.

How big are the iPhone Duo screens?

7.6 inches inside, with a nano-texture finish that cuts glare, and 5.4 inches outside. Apple says the outer display gives 90 per cent of the screen area of an iPhone 18 Pro, and that both displays share the same aspect ratio so apps scale between them rather than reflowing.

Is the iPhone Duo better than the Galaxy Z Fold 8?

Nobody can say until full reviews of the Duo are out. Apple brings the A20 Pro, a grade 5 titanium body, a nano-texture inner screen and the claim about the outer display's usable area. Samsung brings eight generations of practice and a phone you can buy today, often discounted from the same launch price.

Should I wait for the iPhone Duo or buy a phone now?

Wait only if £1,999 is comfortable and you specifically want the folding shape. There are no independent durability results yet, and a screen and hinge are the two worst components to have fail. If you just need a very good phone, a current model costs a fraction of that.

Is there an iPhone Flip coming too?

Apple has tested a clamshell folding iPhone internally, but reporting says it was shelved as not ready, and Apple did not mention it on 9 September. 2027 is the earliest realistic expectation. The flip-style folding phones on sale now are Motorola's razr line and Samsung's Z Flip.

If you would rather not wait for an iPhone Duo, our mobile phone range includes other folding phones.
