What actually decides how good earbuds sound
Before any noise cancelling circuit does anything, the ear tip itself is already doing most of the work. A silicone tip that properly seals your ear canal blocks roughly 15 to 25 decibels of outside noise on its own, purely by being there. Active noise cancelling, the electronic kind, adds another 15 to 30 decibels on top of that, mostly at low frequencies like engine drone and air conditioning hum. It cannot do much about the mid and high frequencies a good seal already blocks.
This is why the single most useful thing you can do with any new pair, ANC or not, is try every tip size in the box before deciding you do not like them. Most earbuds ship with three or four silicone sizes. If none of them seal properly, foam tips (sold separately by brands like Comply) often solve it, because foam expands to fill the shape of your ear canal instead of relying on a rigid silicone fit.
Only once the seal is right does the rest of the spec sheet matter: driver size, codec support (AAC works fine on an iPhone, Android phones do better with aptX or LDAC where the earbuds support it), and the brand’s own tuning. None of it overcomes a bad seal.
Best budget earbuds
Under £25, do not expect the noise cancelling to be very good, but do expect a proper seal, a usable microphone and a charging case, because all three are achievable at this price now. Battery life: the box vs reality
The hours printed on the box are measured at 50 percent volume, with ANC switched off, over a basic Bluetooth codec, in a lab at room temperature. Almost nobody actually listens like that. Real-world testing consistently finds everyday battery life runs around 20 to 25 percent shorter than the advertised figure, and switching ANC on costs a further 20 to 40 percent on top of that.
Earbuds that survive the gym
Two things matter here that do not show up on a spec sheet for everyday earbuds: how they physically stay in during movement, and an IP rating that actually covers sweat, not just light rain. IPX4 is the minimum worth trusting for a workout, IPX5 or higher is better if you run in the rain.
