MediaTek Laptops

MediaTek’s Kompanio processors are Arm chips designed for Chromebooks, and that is what nearly every laptop in this category is.

What they do well is battery life and silence. An Arm processor at this power level needs no fan, so the machine is completely silent, cool to the touch, and will typically run a full school or working day on a charge. It also keeps the price low.

What you need to know is the operating system. These run ChromeOS, not Windows — the Chrome browser, web apps, Google Workspace and Android apps. That is genuinely excellent for study, browsing, email and documents, and it will not run desktop Windows software such as the installed Microsoft Office applications or specialist Windows tools.

Many models are built to education specifications, with reinforced hinges and spill-resistant keyboards, which makes them a sensible choice for a child.
