Workstations
A workstation looks like a powerful desktop PC and is specified for different reasons.
Certification is the main one. Workstation systems are validated by the makers of professional software — CAD, 3D, simulation, broadcast, medical imaging — and ship with drivers and firmware tuned for stability under long, heavy loads rather than for peak frame rates. If your work depends on that software behaving predictably, or your employer requires certified hardware, that is what you are buying.
ECC memory is the second. Error-correcting memory detects and fixes bit errors in RAM, which matters when a calculation runs for hours and a silent corruption would invalidate the result.
Expansion and build. More PCIe lanes, more memory slots, more drive bays, and power supplies and cooling specified for sustained full load rather than bursts.
Support is typically longer and often on-site.
If you do not need certification or ECC, a well-specified desktop PC gives more performance per pound — a legitimate choice worth making deliberately.
