Semi-Modular PSUs

A semi-modular power supply has the cables every build needs — the 24-pin motherboard connector and the CPU power cable — permanently attached, while the rest detach.

That is a genuinely sensible compromise. Those two cables are used in every single build, so making them removable adds cost and an extra connection for no benefit. Everything else — PCIe power for the graphics card, SATA and Molex for drives and fans — plugs in only if you need it, so unused cables never end up stuffed behind the motherboard tray restricting airflow.

Compared with a non-modular unit, you get a considerably tidier build for a small premium. Compared with fully modular, you save money and lose almost nothing.

Where fully modular is still worth it is a small-form-factor case, where there is nowhere to hide even one unnecessary cable, and a build with a glass side panel where appearance matters.

Semi-Modular PSUs Buying Guide and FAQ

This Semi-Modular PSUs range groups units by this feature. Below are the common questions.

What does modular mean on a power supply?

A modular PSU has this feature. It is a useful feature to look for when matching a unit to a modern build.

Do I need a modular power supply?

It depends on your case: SFX units are for small-form-factor builds, while a normal tower takes a standard ATX unit. Match the feature to your parts and case.

What wattage and rating should I pair with it?

Choose wattage around your graphics card, roughly 650 to 750W for mid-range and 850W and up for high-end, and aim for a reputable 80 Plus Gold unit. That combination suits most gaming PCs.
