Laptop DDR5 RAM

Laptop DDR5 uses the shorter SO-DIMM format, not the full-length DIMM a desktop takes — the two are not interchangeable, and neither is DDR4 and DDR5.

Before ordering, check three things about your machine. Does it have slots at all? Many thin-and-light laptops solder the memory to the board and cannot be upgraded. How many slots are free? Some laptops ship with both filled, so an upgrade means replacing rather than adding. And what speed does it support? Faster modules will fit and run, but at the laptop’s rated speed, so paying for 5600MT/s in a machine limited to 4800 gains nothing.

The range here runs from 8GB single modules through 16GB and 32GB, up to 64GB kits, from Kingston, Kingston FURY and ADATA, including ECC modules for mobile workstations that require them.

Laptop DDR5 RAM Buying Guide and FAQ

This Laptop DDR5 RAM range covers DDR5 memory. Below are the common questions on speed, capacity and what works with your board.

Is DDR5 right for my PC?

DDR5 only works in motherboards built for it, and it is not interchangeable with DDR4. The current AMD AM5 platform and the latest Intel chips use DDR5, so most new builds want it. Match the memory to the board you have or are buying.

How much DDR5 do I need?

16GB is the realistic minimum for gaming, 32GB is the comfortable sweet spot for most new builds, and 64GB or more suits heavy content creation. A 32GB kit is the best balance of price and headroom for a typical gaming PC.

What DDR5 speed and timings should I get?

For AMD Ryzen, DDR5-6000 with CL30 is the well-known sweet spot, and most Intel systems are happy at DDR5-6000 or faster. Look for an EXPO or XMP profile so you can switch on the rated speed in the BIOS with one setting.

Should I buy a matched DDR5 kit?

Yes. A matched dual-channel kit (two sticks) gives better performance than a single stick or mismatched modules, and guarantees the rated speed. Enable EXPO or XMP in the BIOS to run it at full speed.
