Printers & Ink

The most useful thing to know before buying a printer is that the purchase price tells you very little about what it will cost you. Manufacturers routinely sell hardware cheaply and make the money on consumables, so a cheaper printer often costs more over three years.

The figure to look for is cost per page, which you can work out from the cartridge or toner price divided by its stated page yield. High-yield cartridges are usually far better value per page than standard ones.

Inkjet or laser is the other decision. Inkjet handles colour and photos well and suits low, occasional volumes — though cartridges can dry out if the printer sits unused for long periods. Laser is faster, cheaper per page in volume, and the toner does not dry out, which makes it the sensible choice for an office or for anyone who prints in bursts.

The range also covers label printers for shipping, filing and asset tagging, along with paper, spares and cleaning supplies.
