iPhone 18 Release Date and UK Price: Pro and Pro Max Are Out Now, the Standard 18 Is Not
The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max went on sale on Friday 18 September 2026, starting at £1,199 and £1,299. The foldable iPhone Duo starts at £1,999 and goes on sale on Friday 23 October. The phone actually called iPhone 18 is not out, and is expected in spring 2027. Apple split its line across two seasons for the first time, which is why the searches and the shelves disagree.

- iPhone 18 release date: common questions
If you searched for the iPhone 18 release date, you probably got a confusing answer, and that is not your fault. Apple announced two phones called iPhone 18 Pro on 9 September and put them on sale on 18 September. It did not announce a phone called iPhone 18. For the first time, Apple has split its iPhone range across two seasons.
So the honest version is that there are three different answers depending on which phone you mean. Below are the confirmed dates and UK prices from Apple’s own announcements, what the Pro actually changed, and a straight read on whether the upgrade is worth it from the phone you are holding.
iPhone 18 release date: when is the new iPhone 18 coming out?
There are three answers, not one, and that is the whole reason this question is confusing.
The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are out. Apple announced them on Wednesday 9 September 2026, opened pre-orders on Saturday 12 September, and put them on sale on Friday 18 September. The iPhone 18 release date in the UK was the same as the first wave everywhere else, covering more than 65 countries. Twenty further countries follow on 25 September.
The foldable, which Apple calls iPhone Duo, comes later. Pre-orders open on Friday 16 October and it goes on sale on Friday 23 October, with 28 more countries on 30 October.
The standard iPhone 18 is not out, and Apple has given it no date. It was not mentioned at the September event. Reporting since points to spring 2027, alongside an iPhone Air 2 and an iPhone 18e. Treat that as expectation rather than a promise.
Apple’s new iPhone launch date has sat in the second week of September for years, and the Apple iPhone 18 release date followed that pattern for the Pro models while breaking it for everything else. So if you have seen a listing for an iPhone 18 with no Pro in the name, it is not a phone you can buy yet.
| Model | Availability | Status | UK starting price |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 18 Pro | On sale 18 September 2026 | Confirmed by Apple | £1,199 |
| iPhone 18 Pro Max | On sale 18 September 2026 | Confirmed by Apple | £1,299 |
| iPhone Duo (first foldable) | Pre-order 16 October, on sale 23 October 2026 | Confirmed by Apple | £1,999 |
| iPhone 18 (standard) | Expected spring 2027 | Not announced | Not announced |
| iPhone 18e | Expected spring 2027 | Not announced | Not announced |
| iPhone Air 2 | Expected spring 2027 | Not announced | Not announced |
Those dates and prices are as Apple announced them on 9 September 2026.
Why Apple split the iPhone 18 launch date across two seasons
Apple used to put every new iPhone on sale in the same September week. In 2026 it shipped only the two most expensive models, then scheduled its first foldable five weeks later, and left the affordable phones for 2027.
The logic is attention. Three premium phones get the whole autumn to themselves, and the cheaper iPhone 18 and 18e become fresh news in the spring instead of a footnote in September.
We published the split-launch call in July, and the evidence was in the display supply chain rather than any leak. Panel orders reported for the range were lopsided: roughly three million panels for the standard iPhone 18 against about eighty four million for the two Pro models. Nobody orders three million screens for a phone they plan to sell in the autumn. Apple’s September event matched that, and the standard iPhone 18 was not mentioned once.
What this means for you is simple. If your budget was built around the regular iPhone price, there is nothing to wait for until spring.
What is new in the iPhone 18 Pro
The camera is the headline, and for once that is not marketing. The 48MP main camera now has a variable aperture, which no iPhone has had before. Six laser-cut blades move between settings, opening to f/1.48 to pull in light and closing to f/4 when you want more of a group in focus. Portraits sit at f/1.8. You can also set the aperture by hand.
That manual control is part of a new Pro controls panel in the Camera app, which adds shutter speed, white balance and a live histogram. If you have ever wanted your phone to behave like a camera, this is the year it does.
The rest of the list:
- A20 Pro chip, paired with a new vapour chamber. Apple says the combination gives the highest sustained performance of any iPhone, which matters more than peak speed if you record video or play for long stretches.
- A smaller Dynamic Island. More usable screen, same features.
- Apple Reference Image. The sensor signs every pixel it captures, and Apple builds an unalterable reference version you can view beside your shot like a digital negative. It is there to prove a photo is real.
- Storage starts at 256GB and runs to 512GB, 1TB and 2TB. The old 128GB base model is gone from the Pro line.
- Video: Cinematic effects can be applied after you shoot, up to 60fps, and Time-lapse now records in 4K Dolby Vision HDR. Audio Mix can isolate music.
It runs iOS 27, which arrived as a free update for older iPhones on 14 September, with Apple Intelligence the same day and Siri AI in beta in English. French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish follow in October.
We put the camera change side by side with last year’s model in our iPhone 18 Pro against iPhone 17 Pro comparison, where the short answer is that the variable aperture buys you about half a stop.
iPhone 18 Pro Max: the battery and the camera
The Pro Max shares the A20 Pro chip, the variable-aperture camera and the 256GB starting storage with the smaller Pro. It is not a different phone. What you pay the extra £100 for is size and endurance.
Apple says the Pro Max delivers the largest increase in battery life ever on an iPhone, from a combination of the new silicon and a physically larger cell. That is the clearest reason to pick it over the Pro.
Worth noting for anyone who followed the rumours through the summer: the wilder camera claims did not land. There is no one-inch sensor. The real change is the aperture mechanism, which is a more useful upgrade than a bigger sensor would have been, because it changes what you can shoot rather than just how much light you gather.
Our read, and this is our opinion rather than a spec: if you buy a Pro Max for the screen and the battery, you will be happy. If you are buying it expecting a camera the smaller Pro does not have, the two are closer this year than they have been for a while.
The phone most people mean when they type iPhone 18, the standard model at the standard price, is the one Apple did not launch. That single fact should shape your whole upgrade plan.
iPhone 18 Pro colours: black did not go anywhere
Colour was one of the most searched iPhone 18 questions all summer, driven by a run of leaks claiming Apple would drop black from the Pro line entirely and lead with a wine red called Dark Cherry. We reported those leaks. They were wrong, and so were we.
The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max ship in four finishes: black, silver, glacier and burgundy. Black is still there. Burgundy is the deep red the leakers were describing, under a different name.
If you were waiting to see whether you would be forced into a colour you did not want, you were not. The standard iPhone 18 usually gets brighter finishes, and since Apple has not launched it, its palette is still unknown.
iPhone Duo: the first foldable iPhone
Apple’s first folding iPhone is called iPhone Duo. Not iPhone Fold, and not iPhone Ultra, which were the two names the leaks had settled on. It was announced on 9 September, pre-orders open on 16 October and it goes on sale on 23 October, starting at £1,999.
The numbers that matter:
- 7.6 inch inner display, with a nano-texture finish that cuts glare. Apple says it is the thinnest iPhone ever when opened.
- 5.4 inch outer display, which Apple puts at 90 percent of the screen area of an iPhone 18 Pro. Both displays share an aspect ratio, so apps scale between them instead of jumping.
- Grade 5 titanium, polished to a mirror finish, in two colours: star white and night sky.
- A20 Pro, a custom vapour chamber and a dual-battery design.
- Storage from 256GB up to 2TB. It ships on iOS 27.1 rather than 27.0.
At £1,999 it is the most expensive iPhone Apple has sold, and £800 more than an iPhone 18 Pro. Our opinion: the interesting claim is not the fold, it is the 90 percent figure. Folding phones have always asked you to accept a cramped outer screen as the price of the big one. If the closed Duo really works like a normal phone, that is the objection answered.
We keep a separate, fuller page on the foldable, because most people still search for it by the name the leaks used: the iPhone Fold, now called iPhone Duo, with the confirmed screens, the titanium build and the October dates.
iPhone 18 price in the UK: every confirmed figure
These come from Apple’s own UK announcement on 9 September 2026, so they are starting prices rather than estimates.
| Model | From | Over 24 months | Storage |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 18 Pro | £1,199 | £39.96 a month | 256GB to 2TB |
| iPhone 18 Pro Max | £1,299 | £43.30 a month | 256GB to 2TB |
| iPhone Duo | £1,999 | £66.63 a month | 256GB to 2TB |
Two things are worth saying plainly. The first is that our July estimate was wrong: we put the Pro at around £1,099 and the Pro Max at £1,199, and both landed £100 higher. The analyst view at the time, a rise of about 200 dollars driven by memory costs, turned out to be closer than the UK figures we quoted.
The second is that the 256GB starting storage takes some of the sting out. The old entry model was 128GB, so you are paying more but not for the same phone.
Apple also lists a trade-in credit for older Pro models on its own store, and networks including EE, O2 and Sky Mobile are running launch deals. Those move week to week, so check the figure on the day rather than trusting any number in an article, including this one.
The 2027 phones: iPhone 18, 18e and Air 2 screens
Apple has said nothing about the spring phones, so this section is the one part of the page that is still reporting rather than fact. It is worth knowing because it settles the spec people argue about most, which is the smooth screen.
Display details for the non-Pro phones leaked in late June from the tipster Digital Chat Station, and were picked up by GSMArena and Notebookcheck. On those figures the standard iPhone 18 keeps a 6.3 inch panel and keeps 120Hz LTPO OLED with it. The iPhone Air 2 grows slightly to 6.55 inches at 1.5K, also 120Hz. The cheapest model, the iPhone 18e, nudges up to 6.12 inches but stays on a 60Hz LTPS panel, so no ProMotion and no always-on display.
If that holds, the smooth-screen divide no longer separates Pro from standard. It separates the 18e from everything above it. A later leak in September added 9GB of memory and an A20 chip to the 18e. None of this is confirmed.
Does the iPhone 18 Pro need a new charger?
No. The iPhone 18 Pro keeps the USB-C port Apple moved to with the iPhone 15, so the cable and plug you already own will work on day one. Apple has not put a plug in the box for years, and that has not changed.
The only reason to buy anything is speed. If your current plug is an old 5W or 12W brick, a USB-C charger rated 40W or higher will fill the phone noticeably faster, and the same plug will run a tablet or most laptops. MagSafe wireless charging continues as before.
If you are switching phones rather than just upgrading the charger, our guide to moving an eSIM to a new phone covers the one step that locks people out on launch day.
Why Apple squeezed its screen suppliers
This part of the story explains the price better than any analyst estimate, and it is the reason we expected the rise to be smaller than the headlines said.
In July, the Korean display trade publication The Elec reported that Apple had proposed paying around 70 dollars per OLED panel for the iPhone 18 Pro Max, with the settled figure estimated nearer 66.50 dollars. That is roughly a 20 per cent cut against what Apple paid for iPhone 17 Pro Max panels, and it applied to both suppliers, Samsung Display and LG Display.
The reason runs through every hardware story of 2026: memory got expensive, so everything else had to get cheaper. Apple was not asking for a worse screen. The panel it wanted for less is actually harder to make, using Samsung Display’s newer M16 material set, which improves efficiency, lifespan and colour.
For scale on what Apple was absorbing, Counterpoint Research put the component bill for the iPhone 18 Pro Max up by nearly 300 dollars year on year, and reckoned the NAND and DRAM alone would come close to matching the entire component cost of the previous model. Its expectation was an average retail rise of 200 dollars, applied unevenly across storage sizes rather than as a flat increase.
What actually happened. The UK Pro came in at £1,199, which is £100 above the estimate we published in July. So the rise was real, and we were too optimistic about the number. But the shape of it matched: Apple raised the sticker and doubled the entry storage from 128GB to 256GB at the same time, which is exactly the uneven, per-tier increase Counterpoint described rather than a flat rise across the range. Per gigabyte, the cheapest Pro you can buy got cheaper.
This is the same force that pushed Valve’s console past a thousand dollars, which we costed part by part in our Steam Machine against a built PC comparison.
Should you buy now or wait?
The answer changed on 18 September. Here it is by situation.
Buy the Pro now if the camera is why you are upgrading
Variable aperture is the first genuinely new camera capability on an iPhone in years, and it is only on the Pro models. If you shoot a lot, this is the upgrade that changes what you can do rather than the one that scores better.
Wait until 23 October if you want the foldable
The iPhone Duo is five weeks behind the Pro. If a folding phone is what you actually want, do not buy a Pro in the meantime. Pre-orders open on 16 October and early stock on a first-generation product tends to be thin.
Do not wait for a standard iPhone 18 this year
It is not coming in 2026. If your budget is built around the regular iPhone price, a current model bought today will serve you for years, and the alternative is waiting until spring for a phone Apple has not even announced.
Skip this generation if you are on an iPhone 17 Pro
Our view, not Apple’s: one generation of A-series gain plus an aperture mechanism is a thin reason to spend £1,199. The jump is worth it from an iPhone 15 Pro or older, where you also gain the battery and the chip.
Buy now if your phone is failing
A cracked screen or a battery that dies by lunchtime is not worth suffering for months. A working phone today beats a better phone in spring.
How to upgrade without wasting money
A little planning turns an upgrade from stressful into simple, and usually cheaper.
Trade in now rather than in December
Your old phone is worth the most in the weeks right after a launch, while demand for the previous generation is still high. Trade-in values drift down from here, so if you are upgrading, do not sit on the old handset.
This is the moment last year’s models get cheaper
Retailers discount the outgoing range as soon as a new one lands. If you are happy with an iPhone 17, the weeks after a September launch are the best-value window of the year.
Back up before you switch, not during
Back up to iCloud or a computer before moving to a new phone. Quick Start makes the transfer painless, but a fresh backup is the safety net if the day goes wrong.
Buy the storage, skip the rest
Photos and 4K video eat space, and you cannot add storage later. Going one tier up is usually money well spent. Beyond that, pay only for what you will use.
Buy from a UK seller for your rights
A UK purchase is covered by UK consumer law with a clear warranty and local support. Grey imports cost you both at exactly the moment you need them.
iPhones you can buy today
If you are not spending £1,199 on a Pro, the outgoing models are the value play, and this is the point in the year when that is most true. If you have already ordered a Pro, our phone cases and accessories section covers the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, and the full iPhone range is here.

iPhone 18 release date: common questions
The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max went on sale on Friday 18 September 2026, after being announced on 9 September and opening for pre-order on 12 September. The foldable iPhone Duo goes on sale on Friday 23 October 2026. The standard iPhone 18 has no date, because Apple has not announced it.
Not the phone called iPhone 18. At its 9 September 2026 event Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro, the iPhone 18 Pro Max and the iPhone Duo, and said nothing about a standard iPhone 18. Reporting since then points to spring 2027.
Yes. It went on sale on 18 September 2026 alongside the iPhone 18 Pro, starting at £1,299 in the UK with 256GB of storage.
£1,199 for the iPhone 18 Pro and £1,299 for the iPhone 18 Pro Max, both starting at 256GB. Apple also lists them at £39.96 and £43.30 a month over 24 months. The iPhone Duo starts at £1,999.
It depends what you are coming from. From an iPhone 15 Pro or older, yes: you gain the A20 Pro chip, a much better battery and the variable-aperture camera. From an iPhone 17 Pro, the gain is one chip generation plus the aperture mechanism, which is a thin reason to spend £1,199 unless photography is your main use.
The 48MP main camera can physically change how wide it opens, using six laser-cut blades. It opens to f/1.48 to gather light in the dark and closes to f/4 to keep more of a group in focus, and you can set it by hand. No previous iPhone could do this.
Four: black, silver, glacier and burgundy. Leaks through the summer claimed Apple would drop black entirely and lead with a red called Dark Cherry. Black stayed, and the red shipped as burgundy.
iPhone Duo. It has a 7.6 inch inner display and a 5.4 inch outer display, is built from grade 5 titanium in star white and night sky, starts at £1,999, and goes on sale on 23 October 2026 after pre-orders open on 16 October.
No. Only the two Pro models and the iPhone Duo launched in 2026. The standard iPhone 18 is expected in spring 2027 with an iPhone Air 2 and an iPhone 18e, though Apple has not confirmed that.
No. It uses the same USB-C port as the iPhone 15, 16 and 17, so your existing cable and plug work. Apple does not include a plug. A 40W or higher USB-C charger will refill it faster if your current one is old.
If you want a Pro, there is nothing left to wait for, it is on sale. If you want the foldable, wait for 23 October. If you want a standard iPhone 18 at the standard price, you are waiting until spring 2027, so a current model bought now is the better move.
The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max went on sale in the UK on Friday 18 September 2026, in the same first wave as more than 65 other countries. The iPhone Duo follows on 23 October. The standard iPhone 18 has no UK launch date because Apple has not announced the phone.
How we know
The dates, prices, colours, storage tiers and camera specifications on this page come from Apple’s own UK press releases of 9 September 2026, linked below, rather than from second-hand coverage. The spring 2027 section is clearly marked as reporting, because Apple has not announced those phones.
We have also left our July mistakes on the page instead of quietly deleting them. We estimated the Pro at £1,099 and repeated leaks that said black was being dropped. Both were wrong, and a page that only shows you its correct predictions is not much use for judging the next ones. We update this guide when Apple changes something.
